Best Time to Visit Kruger National Park

    Updated 8 min read

The short answer: May to September. The longer answer depends on what you want to see, your budget, and how much heat you can handle.

    The Short Answer

For most visitors, the dry winter months of May to September are the best time to visit Kruger National Park. Vegetation is thin, animals concentrate around waterholes, temperatures are mild during the day, and malaria risk is at its lowest.

If you want green landscapes, baby animals and dramatic skies — and don't mind heat and humidity — November to March delivers a completely different kind of safari at lower lodge rates.

    Dry Season (May – September)

Winter is peak safari season. Days are sunny and 22–26°C, nights drop to 5–10°C, and there is almost no rain. With the bush thinning out and surface water disappearing, animals are forced to gather at predictable waterholes — making game viewing dramatically easier.

    • Best Big Five sightings of the year
    • Lowest malaria risk
    • Dust-free roads, comfortable game drives
    • Highest lodge prices — book 6+ months ahead

    Wet Season (November – March)

Summer brings dramatic thunderstorms, lush green bush and an explosion of new life. Impala, wildebeest and zebra calve in the rains, attracting predators. Migrant birds arrive from Europe, lifting the park's species count above 500.

    • Photographer's dream — green backdrops, dramatic skies
    • Birding peaks: 500+ species
    • Baby animals everywhere
    • Hot (32–38°C) and humid; higher malaria risk
    • Lodge rates 20–40% lower than peak

    Shoulder Seasons (April & October)

April and October are the smart traveller's secret. The bush is still relatively open, temperatures are pleasant, the crowds have gone home, and prices sit between peak and low season.

Avoid These Dates if You Can

    • South African school holidays (mid-Dec to mid-Jan, late Mar to mid-Apr, late Jun to mid-Jul, late Sep to early Oct) — Kruger gates fill at sunrise
    • Easter long weekend — lodges fully booked 12 months out
    • Last week of December — peak rates, peak crowds
